Pair of Lovö Chairs by Axel Einar Hjorth

SKU: VTG-1123-1

The beautiful Lovö Chair is an exceptionally treasured vintage find. Designed in the 1930s by Axel Einar Hjorth as part of his ‘Sportstugemöbler’ (weekend cottage or lodge furniture) collection for Nordiska Kompaniet, the models in the beloved Lovö series are regarded by many as Axel Einar Hjorth's masterpieces. Crafted for the weekend cottages that were gaining popularity in Sweden at the time, each series is lovingly named after a Swedish island.

Crafted from solid stained pine, their rich cherry tone exudes a timeless appeal. The green and blue floral vintage cushions, paired with iron rivets, infuse them with old-world charm, creating an aesthetic that effortlessly blends the linear elegance of French Art Deco with the rustic allure of Arts & Crafts. Nearly a century after their creation, the Lovö Chairs are more sought after than ever. This pair of chairs has been professionally refinished.

Axel Einar Hjorth (Swedish, 1888 - 1959) was a Swedish furniture designer, and the chief architect at Nordiska Kompaniet, a high-end department store in Stockholm, from 1927-1938.  His visionary designs, marked by a creative interpretation of classical themes, laid the foundation for a design ethos embraced by a new generation of architects and designers. His legacy became an integral part of the Modernism movement in Sweden and contributed significantly to the burgeoning Swedish design culture's international recognition in the 1920s.
