Model BO55 Sofa by Finn Juhl
Designed in 1946 by Finn Juhl and produced by Bovirke, the BO55 sofa reflects the early development of Juhl’s sculptural approach to seating—where form is shaped as much by negative space as by structure.
The two-seater presents a softly undulating backrest with subtle button tufting, flowing into gently flared arms that cradle the seat. The upholstery reads as a continuous surface, emphasizing volume over line. Raised on tapered beech legs with original stained and painted finish, the body appears lightly suspended, a characteristic gesture in Juhl’s work.
Juhl, trained as an architect, approached furniture as a series of independent, organic forms rather than strict functional components. Unlike many of his Danish contemporaries, he rejected visible structural logic in favor of expressive silhouettes, often separating upholstered elements from their frames to create a sense of lightness and movement. The BO55 sits within this early period, where influences from modern art and biomorphic design begin to fully emerge.
Newly upholstered in a warm gold mohair that accentuates the sofa’s curvature and surface depth.
